CADCA Encourages Coalitions to Participate in the Great American Smokeout

The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout will be held next week on Thursday, November 19e. Since its inception in the 1970’s, this event challenges smokers to quit using tobacco and triumph over addiction. The Smokeout draws attention to the death and disability caused by smoking and to the many resources available to help smokers quit. CADCA’s Geographic Health Equity Alliance (GHEA) would like you to join us and the American Cancer Society in encouraging smokers to make a quit attempt.

This week, the campaign has targeted veterans because of Veteran’s Day. A disproportionate amount of former service members smoke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Tips From Former Smokers campaign has several vignettes featuring veterans that also can be re-worked to disseminate as part of your coalition’s Great American Smokeout campaign. One example of such a story is of “Mark,” an Air Force veteran who describes what helped him finally quit and how he faced the fight of his life against colorectal cancer. A link within the article takes readers to an emotional video about Mark’s story.
