What better environment is there to take training sessions on gambling than Las Vegas? Myron Dean Quon, the Executive Director of National Asian Pacific American Families Against Substance Abuse, will bring the latest research and observations about the connections between gambling addictions and substance use disorders and the intricacies of gambling addictions in the Asian and Tribal communities to CADCA’s Guardians of the Galaxy track.
Quon will bring the latest information on gambling behavior from across the country, such as UCLA’s Gambling Studies Program, to CADCA’s Mid-Year with his courses “Many Gateways: Gambling Addictions and Substance Use Disorders” and “The Growth of the Gaming Industry: Gambling Addictions and the Asian and Tribal Communities.”
Coalition leaders do not have to be Asian or Native American to attend one or both sessions. Anyone with an interest in serving these populations is welcome, Quon said. His “game plan” is to ensure coalition leaders are engaged with awareness and resources to take back into their communities, especially ones that offer gaming facilities and ones that are struggling with assisting people addicted to online gambling. Quon intends to bring a guest speaker from a local casino to the discussion.
“I think people will leave one or both of the training sessions more aware of what problem gambling looks like in order to better assist their community,” he concluded.
