These topics are spaced out throughout the year to correspond with conversations that will take place during your three weeks of NCA training to provide further insight and learning opportunities. Building Capacity for Community Change
A coalition may have the best logic model and action plan possible, but without “people power,” there is no way to get the work done. This webinar will explore the area of coalition capacity building, which is how we mobilize our coalition and our community to work together. Following this webinar, participants will be able to identify the key components of capacity building, discuss how to build capacity in each step of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) model, identify how to recruit and retain members to “do the work” and explore the concept of transformational leadership.

During week two of the NCA, coalition evaluation is described as, “the functional flow of information among the partners and supporters of a community problem solving effort to reduce drug use,” not as, “a dreadful task designed to make a coalition coordinator’s life miserable.” In this supplemental webinar, we will walk through the coalition’s planning process (SPF) to identify ways that coalition members can participate in the coalition evaluation – without even know they are “evaluating” the work of the coalition.

Fidelity in Environmental Prevention
Fidelity is critical to any field, perhaps none more so than environmental prevention. The research is clear that maintaining consistency in the implementation of programs and practices is a primary driver of success. In much of the prevention field, however, fidelity is often only associated with programs; not policies, systems and environments. This webinar will discuss the critical importance of fidelity to our prevention and public health work through the lens of those shared environments. How do we ensure that the environmental strategies we are implementing to improve our communities are consistent with what the science and research have shown to be effective? How do we do so, while still maintaining creativity and allowing for community-based solutions to community-specific issues? We will grapple with these questions and others often encountered when attempting to maintain fidelity in our environmental prevention work.

Mobilizing and organizing a community for action is critical for sharing the workload and meeting the coalition’s goals. The essential components to community organization also help build a solid coalition structure sustainable in the long‐term, but agile enough to take on short-term tasks and pivot when required. This workshop will explore the processes that make a coalition ready for action (i.e., organizational structure, decision making, timelines, and action orientation).
