New HHS Website Features a Community Guide to Creating Safe Drug Disposal Programs

The Department of Health and Human Services has launched a website focused on increasing education about opioid misuse and providing resources for communities. HHS.gov/Opioids is a one-stop Federal resource offering tools and information for patients, families, and friends; health professionals; law enforcement; and other stakeholders about prescription drug abuse and heroin use prevention, treatment & recovery, and overdose response.

The site links to a guide for communities seeking solutions for safe drug disposal. Safe Drug Disposal not only provides background on the issue, it also helps readers understand what safe drug disposal is (and can be), who should be involved in developing a program, and ways safe drug disposal programs can be promoted in the community.  The guide also identifies key issues for program developers to consider and provides resources to help them create safe drug-disposal programs in their communities.

Is your coalition reducing medicine abuse by operating a permanent drop box? Don’t forget to list them on https://rxdrugdropbox.org/.
