1) CADCA SELECTS COALITIONS TO HOST PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE COMMUNITY FORUMS

CADCA is pleased announce that the following five coalitions have been selected to host a Prescription Drug Abuse Community Forum in their respective communities. Each coalition will receive a $3,000 unrestricted mini-grant.

CADCA would like to congratulate all the selected coalitions. There was a large response to the request for applications, and the process was extremely competitive. CADCA recognizes the need for assistance on this issue and will continue to provide support and solicit additional resources to assist you. We encourage you to visit our website at www.cadca.org for continually updated prescription drug abuse prevention tips and information.

2) MID-YEAR TRAINING INSTITUTE A SUCCESS; SEE YOU NEXT YEAR

Nearly 200 people attended CADCA's first-ever Mid Year Training Institute last week in Seattle, Washington. Feedback from participants indicates that the Institute was a major success. Participants received invaluable information and training on a wide range of topics, including leadership, cultural competency, strategic planning, achieving outcomes, environmental approaches to prevention, and grant writing. Two of the participants in the Leadership class reported that they were finally able to establish a dialogue and overcome some of their leadership challenges. In the Grant Writing workshop, attendees learned about the complexities of the process, and used that information to complete actual grant applications using computers provided by CADCA.

CADCA would like to thank the Institute sponsors: CSAT - Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (Dr. Timothy Condon), the Drug Enforcement Agency (John Lunt), and the Executive Office of Weed and Seed (Karen Greenquist of the Seattle U.S. Attorney's Office). All three agencies sponsored the event and helped make it a success!

We look forward to seeing you at next year's Mid-Year Training Institute!

3) STUDY LINKS TOBACCO AND ANTI-SMOKING PRODUCT COMPANIES

A new study has found that tobacco companies used their financial connections with drug firms to undercut the sales message of anti-smoking products, such as nicotine gum and patches. Researchers from the University of California at San Francisco found the companies' financial ties fostered competition and collaboration. Among the three case studies in the report, researchers found that the drug company Procordia marketed both a nicotine gum to help people quit smoking, and a tobacco gum to maintain nicotine habits.

The study also found that nicotine giant Phillip Morris cut a chemical sales contract with Dow Chemical after one of Dow's divisions began making Nicorette gum. When Dow nixed an anti-smoking newsletter that was part of the gum's sales campaign and stopped donations to anti-smoking groups, Phillip Morris resumed its chemical purchases.

You can read the entire study in this week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, or visit http://jama.ama-assn.org/issues/v288n6/abs/jsc20058.html.

4) EXPERT PROVIDES SIX TIPS TO AVOID PARTNERING FAILURES

Dr. Neal Holtan, the medical director of the Minnesota Institute of Public Health, has written an article that suggests substance abuse prevention specialists and medical professionals that partner up are most effective at combating alcohol and drug problems in their communities. Since they both see the effects of substance abuse first hand, Holtan says that they are natural allies.

Holtan lists six attributes that all partnerships need in order to be successful:

You can read the entire article, and learn the details of each attribute in the summer issue of the Journal for Quality and Participation. Visit http://www.aqp.org/pub/jqp/summer2002.html.

5) TEENAGE GIRLS TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT OFTEN SMOKE, STUDY FINDS

A new study finds that teenage girls in high school who are attempting to shed a few pounds often turn to smoking. Girls who say they want to lose weight were 40 percent more likely to smoke cigarettes than those who were weren't seeking to lose weight. However, teenage boys were less likely to smoke, but chose instead to engage in physical activity in order to control their weight.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report is based on national surveys collected in 1999, involving more than 15,349 high-school students.

You can read more about this study in the August 2002 issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

6) SAMSHA TO HOST WEB CHAT FOR RECOVERY MONTH

8) HIT US WITH YOUR BEST SHOT CONTEST WINNER #5

This week's winner of CADCA's "Hit Us With Your Best Shot" photo contest is Informed Families of Miami, FL. The photo was submitted by Molly Carroll.

The winning picture's caption reads: "For the 2001 National Red Ribbon week, Informed Families of Florida teamed up with TulipWorld.com and sold packages of red bulbs to be planted at schools, businesses, churches, community centers and homes across the country. Most importantly, planting the red flower bulbs during Red Ribbon Week with the children seen here provided a unique opportunity to reinforce the "Say No to Drugs" message. Additionally it provided a chance to enjoy the outdoors, connect with nature, take a break from daily stress and see the rewards of something beautiful you've tended."
