1) WOMEN OUTPACE MEN IN EMPHYSEMA DEATHS; SMOKING BLAMED

New figures released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shed more light on the public health epidemic caused by smoking. In 2000, emphysema killed 60,000 women and 59,000 men; in 1980, it killed 16,000 women and 37,000 men. The study shows ten million Americans have been diagnosed with lung cancer and another 14 million have it but don't know it. Doctors say the effects on emphysema patients are debilitating, because they can linger for years as the lungs slowly decay. Doctors also say the disease can be treated early, but the best defense is to not smoke.

2) CADCA's MID-YEAR TRAINING INSTITUTE UNDERWAY; FORUM DATES SET

CADCA's inaugural Mid-Year Training Institute kicked off earlier this week in Seattle. Participants signed up for more than a dozen courses, such as Achieving Outcomes, Strategic Planning and Grant Writing. Each class was designed to help community coalitions succeed with useful tips, critical information, and straight-from-the field experiences from seasoned trainers.

If you couldn't make it to our Mid-Year Training Institute, don't miss our next major event: CADCA's National Leadership Forum XIII. Registration and pre-conference activities begin on February 11, 2003. Forum events and activities take place between February 12 and 14. The theme is "Community Coalitions: The Heart and Soul of America," and the conference will feature exhibitors, networking opportunities, and innovative field prevention ideas. Within the next two weeks, you should receive cost-saving pre-registration forms and value group registration options in the mail. Visit our web site at www.cadca.org frequently for updated Forum news, updates and information.

3) LIFETIME MOVIE EXPLORES TEEN PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE

Lifetime Television continues to address today's social issues with an original movie that explores a major nightmare for any parent: finding out that your child is addicted to drugs. The movie, called "The Secret Life of Zoey," stars Mia Farrow, Julia Whelan and Andrew McCarthy. Farrow portrays a mother who learns that her daughter, Zoey (Whelan) has been stealing prescription drugs out of her medicine cabinet to fuel a growing addiction. Farrow enlists the help of a social worker (McCarthy) to make sure her daughter kicks the habit.

The movie premieres August 19 at 9pm ET on Lifetime. You can learn more about the movie, and read the real-life stories of two young women who overcame drug abuse at http://www.lifetimetv.com/movies/originals/index.html.

CADCA, which is a partner in promoting the movie, has been actively involved in creating awareness of and preventing prescription drug abuse. A "Prescription Drug Abuse" toolkit was recently sent to CADCA members. This handy publication provides critical information on how to detect, combat, and prevent PDA in local communities. Copies are available for $10 each, email info@cadca.org for ordering information.

7) FOR 22nd ANNIVERSARY, MADD RECEIVES FRESH LEADERSHIP AND LOOK

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is commemorating its 22nd anniversary with new logo and a new national president, Wendy J. Hamilton. In an attempt to refocus America's attention on drunk driving, MADD says it sought a more modern approach, by incorporating a new logo and the words 'activism, victim services and education'.

Hamilton began her role as president last month. She became involved in MADD after her sister and nephew were both killed by a drunk driver in 1984.
