1) NIDA STUDY: LINK BETWEEN TEEN DRUG USE AND LATER HEALTH PROBLEMS

The results of a new long-term study provide even further evidence that drugs will harm the mind and body. The study, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), found those who used drugs during their adolescence were more likely to suffer from health problems in early adulthood. Subjects reported high incidences of colds and sinus infections, difficulty in concentrating, remembering and learning, headaches and dizziness.

The study tracked more than 600 youths over 22 years. Research conducted by scientists from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Columbia University began in 1975, and ended when the subject was, on average, 27 years old.

The full article can be found in Volume 30, Issue 6 of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

2) ATTORNEYS GENERAL WANT FDA TO REGULATE NICOTINE LOZENGES

Attorneys general from 42 states want the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate Ariva, a nicotine lozenge marketed as an alternative to smoking. The petitioning attorneys general says Ariva, which is marketed by Star Scientific Inc, contains potentially hazardous substances, appeal to children and undermine public health efforts to reduce adolescent smoking. They say that children would not be able to determine that the product contains nicotine, because it has similar packaging to chewing gum, looks like any other gum, and has a candy-like sweetness.

Ariva officials say that their product is located in retail stores by other tobacco products and valid proof of age is required to buy it.

3) KING COUNTY PASSES SPIRIT OF GIVING ON TO LOCAL COALITIONS

After winning a new Dell Computer as part of CADCA's early dues incentive promotion earlier this year, officials from the King County Community Organizing Program (KCCOP) in Seattle, Washington decided to donate the computer to a less fortunate community coalition in their county. KCCOP will be holding a nomination and drawing to pass it on to a deserving organization within King County. The computer would be much appreciated by the coalitions, many of which are in low income housing communities, and are working with small non-profit organizations to reach community members. To find out more about KCCOP, visit http://www.metrokc.gov/dchs/csd/organizing/index.htm.

4) "HIT US WITH YOUR BEST SHOT" PHOTO CONTEST WINNER #3

This week's winner of CADCA's "Hit Us With Your Best Shot" photo contest is the Mercer County Drug Free Community Support Program of Bluefield, West Virginia. The photo was submitted by Greg Puckett. The winning picture's caption reads: "A key initiative of the Mercer County Drug Free Community Support Program is to establish a teen court initiative. Following a heavy recruiting campaign at the end of the school year (227 youth from four high schools in the community) and a highly successful kickoff event at the end of June (85 participants), the Teen Court has officially started training volunteers for the program.

Designed as a positive voluntary alternative to the standard juvenile justice system, the newly formed Teen Court will help stop first time offenders in their tracks and allow them to re-evaluate what they have done in a positive peer motivation setting. Offenders will be brought before a jury of their peers where they are sentenced to a penalty that properly fits the crime that they have committed. Student volunteers will serve with mentors as defense and prosecution for the court and even evaluate judgment as members of the six to twelve member jury. Other positions that students will participate in include the clerk and bailiff."

6) NY YANKEE DEREK JETER FEATURED ON PDFA WEB SITE

Derek Jeter, the New York Yankee's shortstop sensation, is featured in a new, national anti-drug ad campaign from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA). A major component of the campaign is a new Web site that details how Jeter, a kid from suburban New Jersey with big dreams of playing in the major leagues made his dream a reality, while staying drug-free. The interactive site also features comprehensive questions and answers on drugs for parents and teens, and takes a behind-the-scenes look at the production of Jeter's print and television ads. Jeter is a president of the Turn 2 Foundation, which focuses on issues critical to America's youth, including alcohol and drug abuse, as well as leadership development.
