1) "FAKE" ECSTASY PILLS RAISE ALARM

A variety of chemical concoctions that enterprising drug dealers are trying to pass off as ecstasy have raised alarm among law enforcement officials across the country. USA Today reported on July 23 that these pills are appearing in dance clubs and raves in California, Florida, Ohio, Oregon, and at least 10 other states. Drug experts believe that the use of these chemicals is potentially hazardous since proper scientific research has not been conducted.

The two drugs that are raising the most eyebrows are Foxy, known chemically as 5-MeO-DIPT, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, anxiety and "buzzing" that can last for up to 14 hours, and AMT, known chemically as alphamethyltryptamine, that causes loss of energy, visual patterns, nausea and jaw clenching.

The chemicals used to produce these fake Ecstasy bills are sold legally for scientific use. A lot of the products are sold illegally over the Internet.

2) CADCA PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION MATERIALS NOW AVAILABLE

CADCA has launched a comprehensive campaign to help prevent prescription drug abuse in America. The principal component of the campaign is a comprehensive tool kit for community leaders, that will be supplemented by a series of five community forums nationwide in cities to be determined (see below). Toolkits have been mailed to CADCA members in good standing, and should arrive within a week. Additional copies can be purchased for $8 each. The toolkit will also be available electronically in a .pdf format on www.cadca.org (in the Members Only section, under the Publications button at http://www.cadca.org/MembersOnly.htm). To purchase an additional tool kit(s) or for more information, email info@cadca.org.

CADCA member coalitions interested in hosting a community forum in their city are invited to apply for a $3,000 unrestricted mini-grant before August 13, 2002. Each member coalition selected to receive a mini-grant will be contacted directly by CADCA. Winners will also be announced in the August 15th edition of E-News, CADCA's weekly electronic newsletter (to sign up to receive E-News, visit www.cadca.org). The community forums must take place between August and December, 2002. For more information, contact Keyona King, CADCA Director of Research, at kking@cadca.org.

4) NEW CAMPAIGN AIMED AT CONNECTING COMMUNITY GROUPS

CADCA has been working with the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Ad Council in preparation for the launch of a new ad campaign next month in order to promote awareness of, and increase involvement with community drug-prevention coalitions. The campaign's goal is to demonstrate what communities can accomplish when multiple sectors join forces.

Interested parties can log on to a dedicated web site to read success stories, learn how to get involved with, or start a coalition, and locate a coalition in their community. Site visitors can find anti-drug coalitions in their area by doing a zip code search. Coalitions that are interested in adding their name to the database can do it directly on the website.
The website is soliciting success stories from local organizations who have successfully brought together multiple sectors of the community. If you are interested in submitting a story, please send a copy along to us at CADCA.

Check out the web site at www.helpyourcommunity.org, or call 1-877-KIDS-313 for more information.

5) ONDCP REPORT: DRUG AVAILABILITY DIPS AFTER SEPT. 11

The Office of National Drug Control Policy has released a report that focuses on drug abuse after September 11. The findings show that the availability of illegal drugs, particularly heroin, fell in 12 sites because of increased security at U.S. airports and border checkpoints, according to law enforcement sources. The report also found that while males remain the predominate users of heroin, use among females is rising. Marijuana continues to be the most widely-abused illicit drug.

You can view a copy of the full report at http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/.

6) FDA REJECTS ACAMPROSATE

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rejected a new drug called acamprosate, a which would help recovering alcoholics remain abstinent. The FDA said the drug's manufacturer, Merck, did not adequately demonstrate the drug's safety and asked that it conduct an additional clinical trial in the U.S. The drug is licensed in the USA by Forest Laboratories.
