JUST THREE WEEKS AWAY!! CADCA'S MID-YEAR TRAINING INSTITUTE.
Have you registered for CADCA's
first ever Mid-Year Training Institute? Spaces are still available-but going
real fast. Why not come and learn how to prepare a winning grant proposal with
one of the nation's top grant writing trainers? Each participant in this course
will work on individual computers and leave the session with an actual, workable
draft to submit for funding.
If you don't need training in grant writing, then how about achieving outcomes? Coalitions are being challenged daily to demonstrate outcomes. At the Institute, you can learn how to develop logic models and other tools that will help you to document your successes. The cost to attend is only $299 for CADCA members and $449 for non-CADCA members. A real bargain when you consider that the grant writing training alone usually costs over $1,000!
Participants who book by
the end of the week will receive substantial hotel room rate savings; those
who book next week may pay higher rates. Please visit the CADCA website at www.cadca.org
for more details. Hope to see you in Seattle!

STUDY: FEWER DUI DRIVERS IN STATES WITH PREVENTION EFFORTS
A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that states with strong activities designed to prevent driving under the influence may reduce cases of drinking and driving.
CDC's acting director David Fleming, M.D. says that drunk driving deaths are fully preventable. "This study suggests that activities such as enacting stricter DUI legislation and enforcement by states may reduce alcohol-impaired driving," Fleming said.
The CDC analyzed data collected from a national telephone survey, the 1997 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Rating the States 2000 survey. States were graded on their DUI countermeasures from 1996-1999, with results showing that residents of states with a MADD grade of "D" were 60 percent more likely to report alcohol-impaired driving than were residents from states with a MADD grade of "A".

release at: http://www.cdc.gov/od/oc/media/pressrel/r020703.htm.

YOUTH
ASSOCIATE DRINKING WITH POPULARITY
A new study reveals that
57 percent of young people believe that peers who are popular are more likely
to consume alcohol. The study asked 14- to 22-year olds which risky behaviors
young people believed were associated with popularity. Researchers at the Annenberg
Public Policy Center found that 57 percent of respondents thought their popular
peers drank alcohol, while only 9 percent believed that unpopular kids are likely
to drink. A third of respondents thought popularity made no difference on drinking.
"When you associate behavior with popularity, it makes the products more desirable," said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
The study was released at
the recent Adolescent Risk Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania.
