4) DRUG CZAR RECOGNIZES INDIANA CADCA COALITION
CADCA welcomed the Marion County Youth Congress (MCYC) to the Capitol on June 10. John Walters, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), honored the MCYC for their successful efforts to obtain over 50,000 pledges from Marion County youth K-12 to stay alcohol, tobacco, and drug-free. Walters met with MCYC student representatives at 11 a.m. on June 10 at the ONDCP offices in Washington, D.C., in an event open to the media.
The MCYC is a school-based prevention program that teaches youth to resist drugs and alcohol through character education. The MCYC represents 18 high schools in 11 Indiana school districts. In May of 2000, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson challenged the MCYC to implement an anti-drug pledge campaign with the goal of collecting 20,000 signatures. In 2001, the Mayor increased the goal to 40,000 signatures. By May of this year, the MCYC had collected more than 50,000 signatures.
The story was picked up
by the Indianapolis Star. To read more about the event and the efforts of the
MCYC, go to the related article from the Indianapolis Star at http://www.indystar.com/article.php?indrug11.html.
5) PLANS TO SELL BOTTLED WATER CONTAINING NICOTINE ANNOUNCED
In May, a company called QuickTest 5, Inc. announced plans to sell Nico Water, bottled water containing highly addictive nicotine, at major national drugstore chains, including CVS, Walgreens and Sav-Mor. The product is being marketed as a means to help smokers quit and as an alternative for smokers in circumstances where smoking is not permitted. Nico Water has not been tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to determine its effectiveness and safety. The Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids and 19 other public health organizations petitioned the FDA in December 2001 to assert its authority to keep this product off the market until its safety could be determined by proper independent testing.
Nicotine has never been
approved as an additive to foods. Other commercially available nicotine delivery
devices like Nicorette gum or NicoDerm patches are subject to FDA clinical trials
and regulation. Use of Nico Water could be dangerous, could discourage smokers
from quitting, and could easily fall into the hands of children and serve as
a gateway to use of tobacco products.
