5) NEW INTERACTIVE PARENTING PROGRAM AVAILABLE

For organizations that work with families, the challenges of getting parents to participate in effective parenting programs can be prohibitive. Parenting Wisely is a new form of intervention available to organizations and individuals.

Parenting Wisely is an interactive parent education program designed to help families increase their options with their children (ages 9 to 18) instead of using punitive methods. This program is based on the Functional Family Therapy Model and was designed by a team of health professionals at Ohio University.

Parenting Wisely is endorsed as a Model Program by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Program (OJJDP) and was given an Exemplary Rating by The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). Parenting Wisely is being used by various agencies in the United States, as well as in Canada and Great Britain.

Free preview kits are available; to receive one, email grae@parentingwisely.com, fax (740) 597-1598 or call 866-234-9473.

6) ASIAN/PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH: AN OPPORTUNITY TO REINFORCE ANTI-DRUG VALUES

May is Asian/Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month, which provides an opportunity for Asian American and Pacific Islander American family and community members to open up dialogue about substance abuse issues. * The Asian-language website www.druganswer.com provides information on inhalants and marijuana in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Cambodian.

* A brochure "What Parents Need to Know About Marijuana" is available in Cambodian, Korean, and Vietnamese (quantities may be limited).

Information and brochures may be obtained via toll-free telephone numbers that are staffed by operators speaking the following languages:

Cambodian (888) 258-3145
Cantonese (888) 258-3139
English (800) 788-2800
Korean (888) 258-3137
