3) CASA REPORTS INCREASED DEMAND FOR TREATMENT SIX MONTHS AFTER SEPTEMBER 11

Five cities, 23 states, and Washington, D.C. have detected an increased demand for alcohol and drug treatment since September 11, according to a new survey conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University.

Of the states and cities reporting increases in substance abuse treatment, six states - Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, and Tennessee - and the cities of Detroit, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. characterized the increase as substantial.

The increased demand for treatment is clustered largely on the East Coast. Areas close to the attacks reported increased demands for treatment following September 11, including New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Several states and cities farther away from the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, including Florida, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, and Houston, cited factors such as improved law enforcement, recession, rising unemployment, decreased tourism, and new laws as additional reasons for the increased demand for treatment.

5) TIME ARTICLE ADDRESSES HARVARD STUDY OF COLLEGE BINGE DRINKING

In the March 28 issue of the CADCA E-News, we reported on the release of a Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (CAS) of the new findings from the 2001 CAS survey of more than 10,000 college students at 119 nationally representative, four-year colleges in 38 states, and the District of Columbia. In its April 1 issue, Time magazine reported on this study in-depth, focusing on the rising numbers of female binge drinkers. The writers went to campuses in Syracuse, Georgetown, Tallahassee, and other college towns to put a personal face on this growing problem. The article also addressed the tendency of young women to equate binge drinking with feminism, espousing an "anything guys can do, we can do," attitude about behavior that threatens the health and lives of students on every college campus in America every night of the week. This excellent article can be viewed at http://www.time.com/time/2002/wdrinking/story.html.
