4) NEW NATIONAL AD CAMPAIGN QUESTIONS PHILIP MORRIS' PROPOSED NAME CHANGE

A new national advertisement sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and American Lung Association features a photo of a slithering snake and a headline that reads "No matter how often a snake sheds its skin… it's still a snake." It is running in national newspapers as Philip Morris' shareholders prepare to vote on a name change to The Altria Group at their annual meeting in Richmond, Virginia on April 25. The point of the ad is that the tobacco giant is trying to hide from its past by changing its name, but it has failed to change its harmful marketing practices that result in more youth smoking its Marlboro cigarettes than all other brands combined. To view the ad, go to http://tobaccofreekids.org/reports/philipmorris/ad.pdf.

According to the 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, which provides the most recent data on cigarette brand preference among youth, 54.8 percent of youth smokers prefer Marlboro as their usual brand. A recent poll by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, conducted March 6-10, found that youth are far more likely to recall advertising for Marlboro than for other cigarette brands and that teens are three times as likely as adults to recall Marlboro advertising.

The public health groups' new ad directs readers to a website, www.PhilipMorrisCantHide.org, where they can learn more about the company's deadly habits and take action to hold Philip Morris and the rest of the tobacco industry accountable for their harmful practice of targeting children. Visitors to the website can send a fax to President Bush urging him to fully fund and aggressively pursue the federal government's lawsuit against the tobacco industry, which is scheduled for trial next year.

5) 7th ANNUAL NATIONAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION ON ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS

The National Leadership Institute for Higher Education on Alcohol and Other Drugs provides a focused professional development time for campus drug/alcohol coordinators and others working with prevention issues in higher education. The seventh annual National Leadership Institute will be June 4 - 8, at George Mason University's Johnson Center in Fairfax, VA.

Registration information is available at www.caph.gmu.edu.

6) FUNDING AND HELP FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZING AVAILABLE

For 30 years, the National Training and Information Center (NTIC) has helped local neighborhood groups win fights on issues through direct-action community organizing strategies. NTIC has formed a partnership with the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which provides the funding for this program, and together they are prepared to provide both funding and strategy assistance on securing funding for new and emerging local grassroots groups who are attempting to engage in community organizing.

NTIC defines community organizing as a process of building powerful, community-controlled, democratically run, grassroots non-profit organizations capable of producing social change. NTIC will not fund social service programs, since these do not fit within their definition of community organizing.

In order to apply, a non-profit must meet the following guidelines:

  1. Be less than 5 years old
  2. Have budget under $100,000.
  3. Have less than 5 staff persons (NO staff is OK)
  4. Be neighborhood or community based
  5. Be engaging in community organizing or moving in that direction
  6. Be located in Midwest region (exceptions occasionally allowed)

A two-page proposal is required. For more information on the requirements of the proposal or on the program, contact Joe Mariano at (312) 243-3035 or mariano@ntic-us.org. The deadline for proposals is Wednesday July 31, at 5 p.m.

7) SAFE SCHOOLS CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 19-21

The Hamilton Fish Institute will host its first national conference, "Safe Schools for the 21st Century," in Monterey, CA, June 19-21.

The results of a five-year, seven-university study on school violence prevention will be announced at the conference, which will serve as a forum for researchers and educators seeking to learn what programs and strategies have been proven effective in reducing violence in schools.

Scheduled speakers include Joan Burstyn, Syracuse University; Dr. Catherine Blaya-Debarbieux and Dr. Eric Debarbieux, European Observatory of School Violence at the University of Bordeaux; Michael Furlong, University of California at Santa Barbara; and Jim Griffin, Morehouse School of Medicine; among others.
