1.) INTERESTED IN HELPING OTHER COALITIONS? APPLY FOR CADCA’S MENTORING PROJECT
The Coalition Greenhouse/Mentoring Project, offered by CADCA’s National Community Anti-Drug Coalition Institute, is seeking experienced coalition leaders with proven leadership skills to apply for an innovative effort to help grow and develop new coalitions with the assistance of these mentors. In addition, the Institute will organize and support experienced coalition directors to become even better leaders.

During the one-year Greenhouse project, 30 coalitions without significant funding that are less than one year old and located in economically disadvantaged areas will be selected for intensive four-day training sessions and hands-on mentoring over a one-year period. If you are an experienced coalition leader that would like work with emerging coalitions, visit http://cadca.org/CoalitionInstitute/LeaderMentor/LeaderMentorApplication.htm. Stipends and travel costs will be available. Applications for leader mentors must be submitted to CADCA by April 15, 2003.

If you are a new coalition that would like to participate in the Greenhouse Project, look for our application that will be available beginning April 1, 2003. For more information, visit http://cadca.org/CoalitionInstitute/LeaderMentor/LeaderMentor.htm.

2.) APRIL IS ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH
The theme of next month’s Alcohol Awareness Month is “Give Children a Chance – End Underage Drinking.” The campaign encourages local communities to focus on underage drinking and find solutions that work. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence is working with the Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol-Free to promote the month-long observance. Substance abuse organizations across the country are encouraged to hold events in their local communities to recognize Alcohol Awareness Month. For more information about Alcohol Awareness Month, visit www.alcoholfreekids.org or www.ncadd.org.

3.) DRUG COURT TRAINING CONFERENCE IN RENO, NV, MAY 14-17
The National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) will hold its 9th Annual Adult Drug Court Training Conference in Reno, NV, May 15-17 at the Reno Hilton. Drug court professionals and judges are invited to attend the conference, called “Drug Courts: Reaching New Heights!” Pre-conference workshops will be held on May 14. To find out more about the conference, visit http://www.nadcp.org/events/7registration1.pdf. If you have any questions, contact Dean Schultheiss at (703) 575-9400, ext. 25.

4.) FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS
The Pathways to Collaboration workgroup, funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, will give up to twelve community partnerships a chance to explore what makes a collaborative problem-solving process successful. Organizers are seeking partnerships that have recorded success in using collaboration to address problems (in any area) that are important people in their community, a spirit of curiosity about what made those successes possible, and an interest in participating in a rigorous and provocative learning experience. Partnerships must have been in existence for at least 7 years. The Community Partnership Application Guide is available on the national program office website. Letters are due May 9, 2003.

Selected partnerships will receive $50,000 per year for three years. The Center for the Advancement of Collaborative Strategies in Health at the New York Academy of Medicine is organizing the workgroup. For more information visit www.pathwaystocollaboration.net or call (212) 822-7250.

5.) SMOKERS CAN GAUGE LUNG CANCER RISK BY COUNTING CIGARETTES
A new formula may help smokers and ex-smokers determine their risk of contracting lung cancer, according to new report. Researchers from New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center created the formula, which counts how long and how much smokers had been smoking, and how long since they kicked the habit. The calculation works only for certain people, such as those older than 50 who smoked at least half a pack a day for at least 25 years, since it’s based on a study that tracked cancer development in those people.

Lung cancer, which is one of the deadliest cancers, is expected to kill 157,000 Americans this year. Experts say this calculation will help doctors determine who may be at the greatest risk for the disease. The calculation was published in this week’s Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

6.) SAMHSA TEAMS UP FOR SPECIAL ISSUE OF SCHOLASTIC MAGAZINE
SAMHSA has joined with Scholastic, Inc., to develop and disseminate a special issue of Scholastic magazine focused on underage drinking and designed for use by fifth grade students, their teachers, and their families. SAMHSA plans to distribute the materials to every fifth grade teacher in the U.S. The products include a four-page set of lessons and in-class activities for teachers and a "take-home" packet that provides parents helpful information and family activities to help prevent underage drinking.

SAMHSA says the products reached nearly 100,000 teachers and more than 3 million students last year. The program is now in its second year.

To learn more about the program, visit www.hopetaft.org or contact SAMHSA's Acting Associate Administrator for Alcohol Issues, Stephen Wing, at (301) 443-0593.
