event will feature 12 of CADCA's most requested trainings for community coalition

the Institute will include leading experts in the field of substance abuse prevention
teaching courses in subjects including grant writing, achieving outcomes, leadership,
public policy, cultural competency, and media relations. CADCA will offer CEUs
for the four-day Institute, which will culminate in a commencement exercise.

SATELLITE BROADCAST ON PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE APRIL 4

"Prescription Drugs: Misuse, Abuse, and Addiction Update" satellite
broadcast! Last year, in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse
(NIDA), CADCA aired this broadcast to raise awareness about Prescription Drug
Abuse (PDA). Since then, CADCA has taken several steps to confront this issue,
including the Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Initiative. This broadcast
will contain vital information from last year's broadcast, with updates on the
current state of Prescription Drug Abuse, and strategies for community organizations
to combat PDA.

3) ALCOHOL SCREENING AND INTERVENTION: A FREE TRAINING FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS
The Mental Health Association of Broward County, Florida, is hosting a free training titled "How to Screen for Alcohol Problems in Your Community and How to Conduct a National Alcohol Screening Day Event" Friday, March 22, in Tamarac, FL. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.; the training will be from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with breakfast provided.
This training is geared toward clinicians, health administrators, public health departments, physicians and clinical staff, and social workers and family counselors, among others. Those who represent a registered site for National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) 2002 or have previously conducted a NASD event and would like to reach more people in 2002 are encouraged to participate, as are those who have conducted other types of mental health screenings and would like to learn how to effectively screen for alcohol problems.

4) NATIONAL INHALANTS AND POISONS AWARENESS WEEK MARCH 17-23: SATELLITE BROADCAST PLANNED, PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS AVAILABLE
National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week (NIPAW), March 17-23, offers an opportunity to draw attention to and combat the alarming problems of sniffing and huffing household chemicals such as air fresheners, markers, and glue. In observance of NIPAW, the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the National Guard Bureau, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and CADCA are sponsoring a teleconference titled "Inhalants: Sniffing Out the Truth," on March 21, from 1:30-3:30 p.m., EST. This is the final show in the series entitled "Myths, Facts and Illicit Drugs: What You Should Know." The moderator will be Robert W. Denniston, Deputy Director for Partnerships, National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, Office of National Drug Control Policy. Panelists will be: Neil Rosenberg, M.D., Medical Director, International Institute on Inhalant Abuse, Harvey Weiss, Executive Director, National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, and former user Megan (15) and her mother Joan.

5) NEW FOUNDATION PUBLICATION INCLUDES IDEAS TO REDUCE YOUTH RISKS
In October 2000, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation convened a symposium of 40 distinguished researchers and leaders in the area of alcohol and other drug prevention to consider the current status of prevention in the United States and the steps necessary to move effective prevention programs into practice. The new publication, "Prevention 2000: Moving Effective Programs into Practice" emphasizes new ideas and opportunities for reducing risks faced by youth.
"Prevention 2000" identifies a range of conclusions and recommendations for advancing the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug problems in the United States. The recommendations center on seven key points that can be addressed at the federal, state, and local levels:

6) 2002 NATIONAL STUDENT ASSISTANCE CONFERENCE APRIL 11-14
Time is running out to register for the 2002 National Student Assistance Conference (NSAC), April 11-14 in Dallas, Texas. Over 800 safe and drug free school/student assistance specialists from across the nation will gather at the Hyatt Regency Dallas at Reunion to share best practice ideas and learn about the latest prevention/intervention techniques. This year, NSAC will host educators representing every state in the nation and several other countries. 7) STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM GROUP LEADER WORKSHOPS IN TEXAS
Phoenix House, sponsored by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (TACADA), will offer free Strengthening Families Program training workshops in various sites in Texas. The Strengthening Families Program, a CSAP Model Program, is a 14-session prevention program targeting high-risk 6-11 year-old children. The program involves a parent training group, a children's skills training group, and a family practice session each session. It focuses on improving family attachment, supervision, communication of family values, and expectations not to use drugs. Dr. Karol Kumpfer and Dr. Henry Whiteside are conducting the training workshops; CEU credits are available. Two workshops have been completed; the remaining trainings are:

2. Lubbock, TX, May 6-7
3. San Antonio, TX, May 23-24
4. Houston, TX, June 20 -21
