  • More than 1,700 people attended CADCA’s National Leadership Forum XIII last week at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. 1) OUTSTANDING COALITION, VOLUNTEER, YOUTH AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

CADCA honored several individuals for their tireless efforts during its Leadership Awards Luncheon on Friday. Each year, coalitions, and the people who make them succeed, are awarded for their excellence. Here are CADCA’s Leadership Award recipients for 2002:

3) 2002 EXEMPLARY SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM AWARDS APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED

SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), in collaboration with the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD), the National Prevention Network (NPN), and CADCA, is pleased to announce the Call for Applications for the 2002 Exemplary Substance Abuse Prevention Awards for Innovative Programs. Since its inception over two decades ago, the Exemplary Awards Program has sought to identify and honor outstanding achievements in substance abuse prevention.

Over the years, more than 100 programs have been selected as Exemplary Award winners and they have operated in such diverse settings as community-based organizations, schools, college campuses, and workplaces. The deadline to submit applications is March 31, 2003. To request an application, contact Tanyanic Brown, at (703) 706-0560, ext. 242 or email tbrown@cadca.org.

5) FORMER NIAAA HEAD BECOMES DEPUTY DIRECTOR AT NIH

Raynard S. Kington, M.D. has been named as the Deputy Director at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Kington, who was briefly acting director for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, will replace Ruth Kirschstein, M.D., who will become the Senior Advisor to the NIH Director. Prior to his NIH appointment, Dr. Kington worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he was the Director of the Division of Health Examination Statistics.

6) STATE ASSOCIATIONS OF ADDICTION SERVICES OPENS D.C. OFFICE

State Associations of Addiction Services (SAAS) has opened a national office in Washington, D.C. to conduct education and advocacy efforts. After receiving a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, SAAS is aiming to close the gap between the need for substance abuse treatment and prevention and the capacity of providers to meet those needs.

The D.C. office will conduct education and advocacy efforts. Howard B. Shapiro has been named executive director of the association. SAAS is comprised of 32 state associations whose members are community-based providers of alcohol and drug addiction treatment and prevention services. 7) ADDITIONAL TRAINING DATES FOR NATIONAL ALCOHOL SCREENING DAY

Want to know how to conduct an Alcohol Screening in your community? Organizers have added additional training dates to instruct how to implement the program in your community. National Alcohol Screening Day, which takes place April 10, is a free outreach, education, and screening program designed to screen for at-risk drinking and other alcohol problems, and refer those in need for further evaluation.

Here are the training dates:

  • February 23, New York, NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene 2nd Floor Auditorium, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • March 7, 2003, Phoenix, AZ, Crowne Plaza North Phoenix at Metrocenter, 9 a.m. to 12 noon
