1) FDA APPROVES HEROIN ADDICTION DRUG

The Food and Drug Administration has approved buprenorphine, a drug that treats heroin and other opioid addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) conducted more than 10 years of research on the drug. Physicians must follow stringent guidelines to be able to use buprenorphine in their offices. They must receive a minimum of eight hours of training and obtain a waiver that allows them to prescribe certain controlled substances.

The drug is the first narcotic used to treat opiate dependence that can be prescribed in an office. Buprenorphine is considered to have less risk for causing psychological and or physical dependence than other prescription drugs.

For more information, visit www.buprenorphine.samhsa.gov or call the SAMHSA Buprenorphine Information Center at 1-866-BUP-CSAT from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., EST.

Read the FDA's press release at http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/ANSWERS/2002/ANS01165.html.

2) NEW ADS TARGET DANGERS OF MARIJUANA USE

The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Partnership for a Drug-Free America kicked off a nationwide ad campaign focusing on the dangers of marijuana use. The ads are appearing on television, radio, in magazines and Internet banners.

The powerful ads were released in response to research that shows American youth knew little about marijuana and want to be provided with the facts about the drug. Officials hope the ads will steer teens away from marijuana use after highlighting how the drug can negatively impact their lives.
