The initiative was unveiled during the President’s State of the Union address, and marks the first time a President has addressed drug treatment and recovery before a joint session of Congress.

Henry C. Lozano, President and CEO Californians for Drug-Free Youth and a member of CADCA’s Board of Directors, was an invited guest of First Lady Laura Bush during the State of the Union.

To find out more about the initiative, visit http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/news/press03/012903.html.

7) CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS WEEK IS FEB. 9-15; FREE MATERIALS AVAILABLE

In recognition of National Children of Alcoholics (COA) Week February 9-15, 2003, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign and the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA) have released free youth posters and a brochure that offers advice on dealing with parental substance abuse.

The posters and brochure may be used with adults to impress upon teachers, faith community leaders, coaches, youth workers, counselors and others the influence they have in the lives of children affected by family addiction. Adult caregivers can help by giving children clear messages: youngsters are not to blame for their parents' abusive alcohol or drug use, they are not alone, there are many children just like them and help is available.

The posters (document AVD121 for “Think Again” and document AVD120 for “I Was Afraid to Take a Friend Home”) and the brochure (“It’s Not Your Fault” document MS732) can be ordered through the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information at (800) 788-2800. The posters can be downloaded at www.mediacampaign.org/order/orderposters.asp.
