ONDCP Anti-Meth Campaign

Day/Time:

Thursday, February 14, 2008
4:15 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.

Presenter:

Mark Krawczyk, Deputy Director for Advertising, ONDCP, National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign

Description:

National survey data show that meth use is trending down nationally. However, meth usage rates vary widely by State and with a mean age of first use of 22, anti-drug coalitions face unique challenges in combating meth use where local programs may have traditionally focused on teens or parents of teens. This seminar is designed to share successful strategies and tactics to assist coalitions in targeting this young adult population.

After a brief overview of ONDCP’s Anti-Meth Campaign’s launch in 2007 and some of the key lessons learned, this presentation will focus on what local coalitions can do to extend the reach of the anti-meth message within their own communities, such as refuting common myths about meth, and promoting access to treatment. Attendees will see the tools and free resources available for designing local anti-meth campaigns. Examples of successful earned media events and local activities will also be highlighted. Copies of customizable PSA materials such as ONDCP’s “Open Letter” print ads, radio ads and the “Life After Meth” exhibit will be available.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain familiarity with available data sources on meth.
  • Learn about free resources and materials you can use in your own community.
  • Identify strategies for local use of available advertising materials and ways to generate media interest.
  • Learn how messaging techniques can be used to target markets with varying levels of meth usage and familiarity.
