Presenter:

Description:

Even as teen drug abuse declines, prescription drug abuse continues to increase. This seminar will ground the audience in the scope of the problem and what can be done to reduce it. First person accounts from teens’ who are in recovery from prescription drug abuse will bring the issue to life. The prescription drug abuse problem is multi faceted, but parents’ response can often be quite simple – limit access to reduce diversion and abuse. Unlike many “street drug problems,” this is a substance abuse issue that parents can directly affect, and once they understand the nature of the problem and learn some key tips, parents are quite motivated on this issue. We’ll share how we developed key messages and how to outreach to health professionals, education professionals, parents and local media.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the current scope of the problem
  • Learn the teen and parent perspectives on Rx abuse
  • Learn to employ the latest strategies on reaching out to parents to motivate action and reduce access
  • Review the new (free) ONDCP prescription drug materials and how you can put them to work
  • Get strategies on how you can outreach to key stakeholders on these issues (such as public health professionals, school professionals, and parents)
  • Learn tactics on how to get Rx prevention messages into your local media
