Prevention Across the Lifespan: What are the issues?

Part I

Day/Time:

Wednesday, February 13, 2008
2:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

Presenter:

Joe Wiese, M.S., LPC, CPS, University of Oklahoma

Description:

Unlike many public health issues, the prevention of substance use and abuse has been done in “silos”. Limited efforts have been made to apply a “conception-to-grave” continuum to prevention planning and service delivery. With the goal of thinking outside “silos”, the intersections of human growth and development, brain development, impact of substances on the brain at various stages of development, and strategies to address service provision provide the foundation for this interactive workshop.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the need for providing substance abuse prevention across the lifespan and outside of “silos.”
  • Understand the complex interaction of human growth and development, brain development, effects of drugs on the brain and the body, and critical life transitions.
  • Investigate and consider appropriate ways to provide serves to under-served “age populations.
