Day/Time:

Wednesday, February 13, 2008
2:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Presenter:

Nancy Hans

Description:

This youth planned, youth led seminar is designed to share what youth in Roanoke, Virginia are doing to demonstrate courage, caring and leadership in their communities. Designed after the annual state conference youth in Roanoke took back what they had learned by implementing their STAN (Strategies To Act Now) Plans in their high schools. They then planned and implemented a regional YADAPP specifically to encourage middle school youth to participate in the power of prevention. Through a youth made DVD, songs, dance, PowerPoint and panel presentation youth will share their knowledge, acquired leadership skills, and team approach to create prevention activities in their schools and communities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify leadership skills and attitudes to address common issues among their peers and in their schools.
  • Share the team approach to STAN plans and collaborative efforts within the community/school and with adults.
  • Identify efforts to develop awareness to adults from a youth perspective on youth issues: substance use and abuse, violence, peer pressure, suicide, other risky behaviors.
