You will enjoy a guided walking tour of Georgetown. Georgetown is the mother-city of Washington. This historic neighborhood was a busy shipping port city throughout the 18 th century. The waterfront supported gun factories, tobacco warehouse, and flour mills. Laborers and merchants as well as diplomats, congressmen, and the wealthy society matrons have called this 300-year old city their home. In 1790, Georgetown became part of the District of Columbia; in 1872 Georgetown became part of the city of Washington. In 1951, the town became a historic district. Today, Georgetown is a vibrant neighborhood, shopping district and home to Georgetown University.
After the 1½-2hour walking tour, the group will have time to eat & shop at Georgetown Park . Built in the 1800's, this historic site once housed horse-drawn omnibuses. Later it was used for servicing electric street cars and trolleys. In the 1960's, the site was selected by the White House as the location of the Situation Room and housed equipment for the first hotline to Moscow. During the excavation process in transforming this site into its current Victorian-style, multi-level shopping center, archaeologists unearthed and catalogued thousands of artifacts which can be seen on permanent display in the Georgetown Park Museum.
