XIII OPENS WITH A BANG
ONDCP Director John Walters Unveils National Drug Control Strategy
The Forum officially
kicked off February 12, 2003 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington,
D.C. with nearly 1,700 in attendance. Dozens streamed in to the Ambassador
Ballroom for the opening plenary session, where General Dean motivated
the nation’s leading substance abuse prevention professionals,
community coalition leaders, government officials and a host of others
with his opening remarks. Calling them the “Heart and Soul of
America,” General Dean said community coalitions are an integral
part to keeping our communities safe, healthy and drug-free. White House
Office of National Drug Control Policy Director John P. Walters unveiled
the President’s National Drug Control Strategy before CADCA’s
attendees, and shared three of its primary elements: prevention, treatment
and supply reduction. Director Walters highlighted the critical role
local anti-drug coalitions play in the nation’s efforts to reduce
drug abuse.
In addition, John
B. Brown, acting DEA administrator addressed the opening plenary audience.
Later in the afternoon,
Mr. Charles G. Curie, SAMHSA administrator, Dr. Ting-Kai Li, director
of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) and
Dr. Glen R. Hanson, acting director of the National Institute on Drug
Abuse (NIDA) were present to take part in the afternoon plenary session
entitled “Science at the Heart of Prevention in Communities.”

Congratulations on another outstanding CADCA conference! I enjoyed
every session I attended. As usual, the conference you and your staff
put on every year is top-notch in every area. I am so impressed with
the final product.

Thank you for a great CADCA conference on February 12-14 in Washington,
D.C. A lot of what was discussed is in an area where we have a learning
curve as it deals mainly with prevention. I am beginning to have a
better understanding of the coalition factor.
