Young people who lived in towns with regulations that banned smoking in restaurants were 40 percent less likely to become regular smokers than those in communities with no regulations or weak ones, according to a report in the May issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. The Massachusetts study demonstrates that environmental strategies, such as laws that ban smoking, can be effective in addressing alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

When the Missoula Forum for Children and Youth noticed local nightclub posters throughout Missoula, Mont. reading, "Get Drunk or Die Trying," they were outragedbut outrage soon led to action. Before long, the posters, which had a picture of a youth passed out from too much drinking, were removed and club owners created a new rule to prevent anything like that from ever happening.

A new study led by scientists at Duke University Medical Center shows a connection between early drinking patterns and a tendency to be a heavy drinker in adulthood. The study was funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
