The Justice Department awarded
a total of $45.5 million in grants to fund new and continuation awards for drug-free
coalitions across the nation. The grant awards are administered by the Office
of Justice Programs' (OJP's) Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
(OJJDP) through the Drug-Free Communities Support Program. Grant awards were
continued to 462 existing community coalition projects operating in all 50 states,
the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The White
House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) oversees the comprehensive
program involving youth, parents, business and media representatives, school
officials, law enforcement, civic, volunteer, and fraternal groups, healthcare
professionals and religious organizations.
The new sites were selected through a competitive review process from a pool
of 448 applicants. Over 50 percent of the awards are being made to rural communities
and nearly half are being awarded to economically disadvantaged communities.
