ALEXANDRIA, VA-Community Anti-Drug Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) has teamed up with Lifetime Television to promote a new movie entitled, "The Secret Life of Zoey," which explores the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in America The movie, which stars Mia Farrow, Andrew McCarthy and Julia Whelan, premieres August 19 at 9pm ET on Lifetime.
The movie peers in to a single mother's (played by Farrow) discovery that her seemingly "perfect" teenage daughter (played by Whelan), is stealing drugs from her medicine cabinet to support an addiction to prescription pills. Farrow's character springs in to action, and recruits the help of a no-holds barred psychiatric social worker (played by McCarthy) to make sure her daughter overcomes this dangerous addiction.
"I am delighted that Lifetime has embarked on putting the spotlight on what is truly a national epidemic," CADCA Chairman and CEO General Arthur T. Dean said. "I am hoping that this movie will increase awareness and understanding of this problem, and perhaps alert public officials that we need to do more to combat a problem that can strike anyone, in any household at any time."
Visitors to the movie's website (http://www.lifetimetv.com/movies/originals/) can learn more about the production, its stars and find out how two real-life women kicked their own drug addictions. Lifetime web site visitors will also find links to several drug-abuse prevention related organizations' websites, including CADCA (www.cadca.org).
CADCA has been actively
involved in working to prevent prescription drug abuse (PDA) in America. Last
month, CADCA launched a campaign to combat PDA by publishing a tool kit, that
provides critical information on how local community coalitions can work to
prevent PDA. Copies of the tool kit are available for purchase for $10, email
